Physical and chemical control of growth and viability of pathogens

Essay Instructions:

As you know, the Session Long Project for this course is to compare and contrast specific characteristics between the pathogenic microorganism and non-pathogenic microorganism that were selected in your Module 1 and 2 SLPs. For this module you are to do the following: Discuss the metabolic requirements for growth of each microbe and select one antibiotic (bacteria), antiviral (virus) or antifungal (fungi) agent, depending on the pathogens that you selected. Discuss the mechanism of action by which the drug kills or inhibits the growth of the selected pathogen. Be sure to look on your ebrary bookshelf for many useful books that will help you begin your research! Try A Concise Manual of Pathogenic Microbiology, Antibacterial Agents: Chemistry, Mode of Action, Mechanisms of Resistance, and Clinical Applications, and/or Fungal Infection: Diagnosis and Management to begin your research. Please upload your M3 SLP when it is completed. Note: A "PR" grade will be assigned to SLP Module assignments where critical thinking is not an important factor. The "PR" grade means "Progress"; however, in practical terms it means that the student's work is satisfactory. Your assignment is due by the Monday following the end of this Module. Please upload your case assignment.

Introduction
The microbial metabolism is defined as the means in which a microbe such as bacteria, fungi and viruses gathers and obtains food and energy that is needed for its growth and development. The essay identifies the growth requirements for microbes and their respective drug treatment mechanisms.
Bacteria metabolism identifies the bacterial energy requirement for building and structural construction and protein and membrane strengthening that enhances the power of the bacteria. The minimum requirement has been identified to be supply of water, nitrogen, carbon and irons. Some bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Actinomyces viscosus, can synthesize all the lipids, amino acids, carbohydrates and nucleotides necessary that is a necessity for the growth and division. Apart from the basic requirements, bacterial growth also requires presence and supply of oxygen for fermentation to take place. Anaerobes such as obligates are however killed by oxygen since they lack enzymes or catalase that break down hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen. In the human host, the bacteria ineffectively compete with the host's metabolism for iron and other nutrients (Alberts, 2002).
Bacterial infections such as those caused by Actinomyces viscosus can be treated by tetracyclines, clindamycin or erythomycin. Clindamycin is a protein inhibitor which inhibits ribosomal translocation by binding to the 50S rRNA of the large bacterial ribosome subunit.
For the growth of viruses, a live host must be available for its growth and development. That means that for it to replicate, it must stay within a host. As ...
