Internal factors mainly entail the factors within the company and affect its ability to change or adapt to change. One example of an internal factor is communication. Communication impacts how the message or vision for change is perceived by employees and how prepared everyone is about an incoming change. Are all employees aware of the change? Do they know how it will impact their lives? Were they involved in the change process? Do they have reservations on the changing prospect, and if yes, have these been resolved? Communication is a crucial internal factor that helps to guarantee the reception of a change idea (Appelbaum et al., 2017). Another example would be organizational culture. Organizational culture mainly entails an organization's DNA. It represents how an organization is, what it represents, how employees perceive it, and some of the attributes, values, and principles it upholds. If the culture is adaptive, the chances are high that change will not be a problem. However, if an organization's culture is rigid, it will be incredibly difficult to change the chances are high.
On the other hand, external factors mainly represent the factors outside an organization's control. These factors can impact an organization regardless of its values, principles, or even communication. According to Jones et al. (2019), organizations must continually assess the external environment they operate in so that they can be ready to adapt to the changing landscape. The first example of an external factor is technology. Technological developments can force an organization to change or adapt to change. For example, when the ATM technology came about, all banks and financial institutions had to adopt it because it changed the banking sector's environment. Another example is policies or government laws. These are quite crucial and directly impact business as well as an organization's ability to change. Laws and policies can introduce a change in a sector, and this can directly impact how organizations operate going forward. The economic landscape is also another external factor that directly impacts an organization's ability to change. For example, during the 2008/2009 economic crisis, companies had to restructure and reorganize. For many companies, change was forced upon them, and many had to adapt.
