In European countries, governments have been involved actively in the regulation of prices, which adversely affects the pricing of drugs. This makes it problematic for Pfizer to set up higher prices and improve its margins. In the US, the government has been less involved in regulating the prices of drugs, until recently (Kratochvil & Nell, 2020). This has exposed pharmaceutical companies to public and political pressure to reduce prices, which has further reduced profit margins. Secondly, established pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer are facing stiff competition from generics. At the same time, large pharmaceutical companies face a huge decline in sales when patent protection ends for their “breakthrough” or “first-in-class” drugs.
