Case Assignment
In this assignment, you will demonstrate your comprehension of the main principles of health information systems as well as the primary role of health informatics in healthcare organizations.
Answer the following questions in detail:
What are the current challenges in healthcare that are driving health information systems (HIS) adoption in the United States? How might HIS initiatives help the U.S. health system address these issues?
What are a few of the many ways that HIS data can be used not only for supporting the delivery of healthcare services, but for additional purposes such as protecting the public’s health?
Why are healthcare organizations just in the beginning stages of engaging patients in their care (i.e., patient portals)? Do you think HIS has anything to do with this change? Do you think this will have a beneficial effect for the organizations? For the patients? Explain.

Challenges in Healthcare and Healthcare Information Systems (HIS) Initiatives to Address the Issues
One of the challenges in healthcare in the United States is the lack of sufficient resources to cater to sick individuals (Crowley et al., 2023, p. 1089). The public health system does not receive enough funds to get all the resources required for treatment. The amount of money individuals pay to access hospital services in the United States is high. Due to the high charges needed for medication, individuals end up in medical debt in the United States, causing a significant challenge in the system. Individuals without insurance coverage tend to accumulate high bills that prevent them from accessing other services in the healthcare industry.
HIS initiatives can help solve the challenges of limited resources and debts in the healthcare industry by using the available data to set priorities for the necessary resources and develop a manageable payment plan. A HIS initiative that helps prioritize the required resources involves collecting data from individuals in a specific region about the illnesses that affect individuals the most. Then, the system analyzes the available resources for these illnesses. The type of illnesses that recur the most and have the fewest resources receive the highest priorities regarding budget allocation. Furthermore, HIS can also help foster alternative means of treatment for illnesses that do not require individuals to end up in hospitals. For example, if obesity affects many individuals, and there are no sufficient resources for treatment, doctors can work with technology experts to develop applications that help individuals exercise so their conditions do not get them to the hospital. When it comes to payment plans, HIS can integrate systems that allow people to have their salaries deducted in small quantities to pay their existing medical debt.
Ways HIS Data Can be Used for Supporting Delivery of Healthcare Services and Additional Purposes
HIS is effective in helping individuals get personalized medication. Medical practitioners do so from a general perspective when developing medication and treatment plans for the public. Over-the-counter drugs have undergone many tests for them to be approved for use by humans. However, they are n...
