Critical Analysis: Case study on being transparent as a Medical Leader
ORGANIZATION BEHAVIOR, STRUCTURE, AND ASSESSMENT
Assignment Overview
Health care management requires leadership skills which will test your ability to make vital decisions. “Like a rapidly mutating cancer cell, poor leadership within healthcare systems can cause toxic symptoms that adversely impact organizational work cultures and staff satisfaction and lead to burnout” (Werberg, 2010, para. 1). Assessments made by leadership have a direct relation to many areas, including but not limited to the following: The quality of care provided, staff morale, and organizational reputation. As a trailblazer of your organization, you will use effective leadership skills to manage/avoid conflict, make effective recommendations, manage staff, and protect the overall quality/efficiency of the organization. To make effective decisions as a leader you should identify the major facts, indicate if or what problems exist, and finally, recommend a solution.
This assignment requires you to review a practical case study and analyze the elements of poor leadership. The case study also explores characteristics of a health care leader while introducing safety culture. Your assessment and responses to the realistic scenario should be based off leadership attributes.

Poor medical leadership can make or break an institution, especially during a time of crisis, bringing about negative outcomes. In many cases, doctors have had to manage themselves, others, and the situation at hand. However, a lot has changed in the modern age with the introduction of medical leadership. Medical care that has leadership challenges gets into and finds it hard to get out of the crisis, just like in the case study. Since everything in a hospital involves human life, things can get out of hand very fast. The slightest medical mistake can lead to adverse effects such as developing complications, experiencing allergies and side effects, impairment, and even death. Therefore, effective leadership leads to efficiency, reduced conflict, high performance, staff, and patient satisfaction, and, most importantly, quality medical care. The essay will analyze the leadership problems that come with Dr. Paul Grine's case study, solutions, and recommendations.
In summary, the case study evaluates two similar patient safety situations whose outcomes were different depending on the level of leadership skills applied. While both New York City and Strong Memorial hospitals violated patient safety protocols, the former concealed while the later decided ton transparency disclosure. One can argue that the two cases are different, that is why the outcome was different, and that disclosed because the patient had died, leaving them with no choice. New York City hospital represents the Marjory, who would choose concealing and even closed-door settlement to protect themselves from lawsuits and even salvage their reputation. On the other hand, Strong Memorial is a minority, although they make one big mistake, which is protecting their health practitioners from taking responsibility for their actions. We learn that transparency is vital despite the consequences that might come from it.
The first problem evident in the case study is what a leader should do when they have to choose between transparency and their reputation. Most leaders would choose their reputation and decide not to admit to medical error. In most cases, transparency is not exactly a good thing, as it will bring about lawsuits and worse cancelation of your license. By admitting to system failures, Dr. Paul Grine exposes the hospital to the wrath of the reporters. They can report anything from negligence to the poor state of the hospital's systems. Choosing between transparency and reputation is the greatest problem a leader has to encounter. The other problem is the leader constantly has to choose between the physicians and the patient in moments of conflict. In this case, Dr. Paul Grine refuses to acknowledge the mistake of the doctor for prescribing and that of the nurse for administering. The pa...
