Explain how lipids, in the form of triglycerides, are broken down to produce ATP, including each of the following:
The pathways involved in the breakdown: The triglycerides are first broken into fatty acids and glycerol, while the fatty acids are converted into Acetyl CoA (two carbon atoms) through the beta oxidation process. The process requires NADH and FADH2, which are coenzymes that are necessary for ATP synthesis and reduction of oxygen. Acetyl CoA is in turn broken into carbon dioxide and water where there is release of energy in the form of ATP (Ahern & Rajagopal, 2012). Glycerol does not form part of energy as it is synthesized into glucose through the liver cells.
The substrate(s) and end product(s) of the pathways: The triglycerides are the main energy reserve of the body, while the triglycerides and Acetyl CoA are the substrates. The products of triglycerides are glycerol and fatty acids, but the end products are carbon dioxide, water and ATP.
