Abstract I look at the various ways in which Christy can better handle future Romani patients and their families, as well as other cultures in general. I then look at what I`ve learned after completing the lessons and draw conclusion. And finally, I look at how an organization, any organization, can improve its cultural competence among its staff members so that cultural bias and discrimination is eliminated. BHS414 Relationships and Expectations ..Case...Mod 3 How Christy Can Better Handle a Romani Patient If Christy knew that Romani patients believe that illnesses often stem from impurities and that they worry that hospitals might cause further contamination, she wouldn`t have used the same washcloth to wash Rose`s upper and lower body, and neither would she have touched Rose`s food. If she knew about the Romani culture, she would not have been critical of Rose`s family not bringing her in sooner, because she would have known that for the Romani, seeking care in a hospital is typically referred as a last resort, after their own cultural remedies have failed to work (The inside Story). The next time Christy encounters a Romani patient, there are a few things she ought to ask so that she maintains a respectable relationship with the patient`s family and therefore handle the situation better. She should, according to Learning Activity 1 of the Core Concepts in Cultural Competence, ask them: what they think could have caused the patient`s problem; who makes medical decisions in their family; what they hope the patient`s hospitalization will cause, and what they dread; the treatments they`ve tried; the most important thing she can learn about their culture; if she`s said or done anything that is contrary to their beliefs; and how she can best help them (Big Picture).
