Relationships and Expectations of African American Culture

Abstract
In this article I use PEN-3, a model that was developed to centralize culture in the health promotion interventions, as a framework to be used in addressing high blood pressure among Africans Americans. I address the relationships and expectations of these African American men, and specifically their Perceptions, Enablers and Nurtures.
Introduction
The African American culture is one of the major cultures in the United States. In 2010, the total population of all African Americans, including those of mixed races, was estimated at just over 42 million, thereby making up approximately 13.6 percent of the total U.S. population. The African American men are known to have the highest rate of high blood pressure, or hypertension, of any group in the U.S. The rate of high blood pressure in them is three times as high as the rate of their counterpart white men (Melnick, 2010).
Each of the PEN-3 model’s three factors within the dimension of Relationships and Expectations applies to the African American culture, due to the following reasons.
Perception
This may be defined as the beliefs; knowledge as well as values in decision making that are focused either on individuals or groups, or even the reciprocity of emotion as well as rational cues to behavioral actions. According to Ravenell, Johnson and Whitaker (2006), African-American men do not believe in going to a hospital and receiving a medical check-up if they feel that they are healthy, i.e. not having any physical ailments, and also feeling mentally as well as emotionally fit. Lee (2012) states that one reason black men hesitate in getting medical attention is fear, as they believe that “what they don’t know won’t hurt them.” As a result, they may not be able to know that they are suffering from blood pressure and perhaps even discover the hypertension while it is still at an early stage, and hence be able to deal with it effectively before it gets worse until it becomes too late and the high blood pressure leads to other complications. It is necessary to understand this perception of the African American men on health facilities.
Enablers
These are resources as well as institutional support, wealth (which in this case means assets over liability) as a measure of power and resources, costs and availability...
