The need for quality in healthcare has driven organizations and leaders in the sector to implement frameworks to maintain and improve the quality of services offered. Quality assurance (QA) refers to compliance with particular expectations and standards with the aim of improving competence, patient care quality, and patient satisfaction (Agha, 2021). In essence, QA provides confidence to key stakeholders, both internal and external, that quality expectations will be achieved. A key goal of QA according to Agha (2021) is enhancing the quality of health professionals in an organization by carrying out training activities. In this age of technology where information is shared easily, quality assurance is a necessary practice in any healthcare organization.
An example of QA is the use of several quality measures at the Mayo Clinic to ensure that variables related to quality are monitored (Mayo Clinic, n.d.). The healthcare organization has in place process measures, outcome measures, quality rankings, and patient satisfaction measures all intended to maintain the quality of care and services (Mayo Clinic, n.d.). In the organization, process measures are employed to assess whether particular procedures are followed to ensure timeliness and effectiveness in the provision of care.
