Aseptic Techniques on CLABSI Literature Review
In an adult cardiac critical care unit, Gupta et al. report how the bundle approach achieved zero central line-associated bloodstream infections (2021). According to the authors, in intensive care units, central venous catheterization is frequently utilized with critically ill patients (ICU). It might lead to problems that would raise morbidity and mortality. In the coronary ICU (CICU) at the cardiac hospital, the rate of central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) was 3.11/1000 central line days in 2016, compared to 2.82/1000 central line days in 2015 (Gupta et al., 2021, VII). The project, in conjunction with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, employed evidence-based techniques in the form of bundles to eradicate CLABSI in the CICU (IHI). Adopting an evidence-based CLABSI process monitoring and prevention package allowed for a long-lasting and significant improvement in reducing the CLABSI rate in adult CICU.
Mahieu et al. did a nationwide study to examine the Belgian neonatal critical care units' compliance with the prevention procedures for central line-associated bloodstream infections (2022). The study found substantial variation and variance in how Belgian NICUs followed the CLABSI preventive recommendations, particularly concerning catheter quality control and care. Less diversity exists amongst the insertion guideline items, with a moderate 72% total compliance rate (Mahieu et al., 2022, VI). ...
