Healthcare sector is entitled to providing quality health to patients and community as a whole. Nurses provide treatment services to patients, as well as various development programs to the members of a community. To ensure a proper healthcare service, a good leadership is established at the healthcare facilities, to act as watchdogs to the nursing team. In addition, nurses should also assume the leadership positions to maintain their full responsibility towards health services. The chief mission of the medical practitioners is to ensure quality treatment to meet patient’s satisfaction. Therefore, effective approaches on leadership and management are considered to ensure that the medical goals are met (Gopee & Galloway, 2017). The US government has embraced the use of various health technologies in hospitals as a strategy for improving the quality of health services. However, the healthcare sector faces a blow in their services due to shortage of nurses. The current shortage of nurses is posing a serious drawback to the health sector since the patients are continuously outnumbering the nurses. Consequently, this reduces the quality of the services provided by the health practitioners. Solving the issues on the nurses’ shortage requires a proper assessment of the causes of the shortage, and various approaches to solve the challenges.
Nursing shortage is one of the major concerns in the healthcare sector in the United States of America. The shortage has led to decrease in the quality of services provided by the nurses, as well as poor patient satisfaction, since, patients have outnumbered the nurses. The US government has availed various careers to cater for interests of women, which has negatively impacted on nursing professional (Wager, Lee, & Glaser, 2017). Majority of women go for the other careers, leaving the nursing field with fewer individuals. Besides, nursing shortage is also caused by inadequate nursing schools faculties. Majority of the available faculties do not have proper facilities to offer the best nursing training. Lack of enough qualified medical practitioners poses a great challenge to the few nurses as they are overworked due to the underlying workload at the health facilities. The nursing shortage usually affects the treatment services offered to the patients thereby resulting in high mortality rates. Also, nurse turn-overs affects the performance and the profitability of the healthcare organizations. According to various researches that have been carried out in the US, the health facilities are losing more than $ 300,000 annually due to nurse turn-over.
However, the challenges can be solved through establishment of a good leadership and management that may play a major role in solving the problems using different approaches. First, a nurse manager should provide a conducive working environment to the workers. The manager should possess various skills and tactics for ensuring a proper handling of the diversified groups of health workers (Northouse, 2018). Maintenance of a good working environment is necessary for establishing nurses’ morale towards their work. The good working environment can be ensured through offering flexible work schedules to the workers according to their ages and positions.
