CVD is the leading mortality cause in the US with 800,000 deaths and 6 million hospital admissions attributed to it annually (Pearson-Stuttard, et al., 2017). CVD in the country is characterized by well-established disparities in outcomes between minorities and non-minorities (Graham, 2015). For example, for African Americans or Blacks, they are 30% more likely to die from heart disease. In addition, they are more likely to have stroke, a higher rate of MI, heart failure, as well as increased ACS death rate. A number of policies such as increased taxation of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and subsidies on fruit and vegetables have been put in place to address CVD.
A key ethic principle that has been applied to CVD and has resulted in population disparities is justice. Specifically, the principle of procedural justice involves fairness in the allocation of resources as everyone is deemed equal before the law (Summers, 2018).
