An Explanation of the Pathophysiological Mechanisms of Iron Deficiency Anemia and Pernicious Anemia
The red blood cells are the main oxygen carriers in the human body. When these cells dysfunction, one can suffer from anemia. It is a disorder where the human organs fail to gain enough oxygen from the blood supply. It can be pernicious or iron-deficiency anemia.
Pernicious anemia occurs due to the lack of vitamin B-12 or the lack of deficiency of cobalamin. The illness affects individuals with inadequate vitamin B-12 and poor uptake of cobalamin in the intestine. The deficiency limits the body from producing hemoglobin, which is a protein involved in the transportation of oxygen in the blood. Resultantly, people with pernicious anemia suffer from the red blood cell dysfunction that reduces oxygenation in the body. Iron deficiency can be due to the lack sufficient iron in the body. The deficiency of iron disrupts the functioning of hemoglobin, leading to anemia (Silver, 2014).
