Respiratory System
The respiratory system is the organs and other parts of your body entangled in breathing when you give and take oxygen and carbon dioxide (Ratini, 2019). It’s the system that helps you breathe. Besides breathing, the respiratory system also has different functions. Those are as follow:
* Let you talk and smell.
* Warms air to match your body temperature.
* Moisturizes air to the humidity level your body needs.
* Carries oxygen to the cells in your body.
* Removes waste gases, including carbon dioxide, from the body when you exhale.
* Protects your airways from unfavorable substances and irritants.
How Do We Breathe?
Breathing starts at the nose or mouth, where oxygenated air is brought in before moving down the pharynx, larynx, and trachea. The trachea branches into two bronchi, each going into a lung. Each bronchus divides into tinier bronchi, and again into even little tubes called bronchioles. At the end of the bronchioles are air sacs called alveoli, and this is where gas exchange takes place. An important structure of respiration is the diaphragm. This is where inhalation and exhalation occur. Inhalation is the act of breathing in oxygen, while exhalation is the act of breathing out carbon dioxide When the diaphragm contracts, it flattens and the lungs enlarge, drawing air into the lungs. When it relaxes, air flows out, allowing the lungs to flatten.
