Iron – Deficiency Anemia Anemia is one of the most common misunderstood conditions. Anemia was derived from two Greek words meaning “without blood”. It is commonly referred to as the reduction of red blood cells or hemoglobin Mendeley Citation{46233308-0008-4dd8-81ee-837aa946cfa7} Prev{(Nair & Peate, 2009)}(Nair & Peate, 2009). The decrease in hemoglobin in the blood results in the reduced ability of the blood to carry oxygen to the rest of the body. The most common cause of anemia is lack of iron in the blood. Iron is an important building block for red blood cells. Without iron, the body will not be able to make enough red blood cells Mendeley Citation{174ddf21-9720-45be-b0c9-b77b8ec01a95} Prev{(Chen, 2011)}(Chen, 2011). Iron deficiency anemia is one of the several types of microcytic-hypochromic anemia. This type of anemia are characterized by erythrocytes that are smaller and lesser amount in hemoglobin Mendeley Citation{c1b1ae1c-1c63-42cf-ad03-9ae836381e63} Prev{(McCance, Huether, & Brashers, 2010)}(McCance, Huether, & Brashers, 2010) Given the symptoms of Ms. A’s condition, she is most likely to have iron-deficiency anemia. Her subjective symptoms include increased shortness of breath and low levels of energy and enthusiasm, which gets worse during her menses. She also mentioned that she had suffered menorrhagia and dysmenorrhea for 10-12 years now and that she takes Aspirin every 4 hours for the whole duration of her menses. Low levels of energy and enthusiasm is also a characteristic of pernicious anemia however, with pernicious anemia, numbness and tingling of the hands and feet is also present (Lab Tests Online, 2011), a symptom that is not mentioned by Ms. A. Her symptoms worsen during her monthly period. Menorraghia is clinically defined as total blood loss exceeding 80 ml of ml per menstrual cycle (Hallberg & Nilsson, 1964). With severe blood loss during menstrual period, red blood cells is also flushed out of the system consequently, iron is also lost. Iron loss occurs when the body’s supply of iron is depleted.in Ms A’s case, her iron loss was caused by heavy menstrual bleeding or menorrhagia Mendeley Citation{46233308-0008-4dd8-81ee-837aa946cfa7} Prev{(Nair & Peate, 2009)}(Nair & Peate, 2009). Her intake of aspirin may have also contributed to her anemia. Chronic low dose intake of aspirin may predispose a patient to severe bleeding. Though it has not been established that low dose aspirin can be associated with anemia in the absence of overt bleeding,...
