One of the advanced practice nursing (APN) roles is the nursing practitioner. Its evolution has been complex and long. With it, innovation and confusion have been witnessed at the same time. Since nursing practitioner is one of the advanced nursing roles, it has been among the concepts that have undergone serious research and scrutiny. This paper examines briefly the historic development of nursing practitioner, the forces behind its development of APNs and the force that has got the most significant impact.
In the United States, the nursing practitioner was introduced in 1965 (Barton, Bevan & Mooney, 2012). The principle through which the role was built on includes extending the nurse specialist roles. It was also built on the basis of integrating traditional diagnostic skills openly. The need for this role was due to the time’s social issues. At that time, the pediatric nurses were very few (Kaasalainen, Martin-Misener, Kilpatrick, Harbman, Bryant-Lukosius, Donald, Carter & DiCenso, 2010).
It was during this time when nurses were gaining a distance and greater autonomy from medical authority's traditional dominance.
