There is a strong correlation between health and academic performance among students. Any investment in students' health is an investment to enhance educational outcomes. However, despite this known association, American schools are not keen on providing school health services and programs. Various factors, such as inadequate funding and the absence of laws promoting school health are the main reasons American schools do not focus on school health.
American schools have inadequate funding to support school health programs. Even though there has been an increase in school funding in recent years, it follows years of successive budget cuts in the wake of the Great Recession, which saw most states spending less on academic institutions. Education funding relies heavily on insufficient state and local resources to finance school activities. Schools in low-income concentrated areas have to contend with understaffing, crowded classrooms, and reduced services. Therefore, inadequate funding constraints school administrators and education officials from offering school health programs. They are forced to focus the available resources on providing education services to students because it is the primary objective of American schools.
