This can be the text used by the teacher to model the skill. The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter Learning Target What comprehension skill will students learn? Students will learn to recognize and characterize the story's main characters. Assessment How will you assess the students’ understanding of the learning target? Students will make a character chart about the primary protagonists and fill it out. The teacher will assess pupils' knowledge based on their participation and responses during class discussions. Materials What materials or instructional resources are needed for the teacher and students? How will they support and enhance the lesson? The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter Character charts Markers Pencils and paper These materials will support and enhance the lesson by providing students with a tangible way to organize and visualize the characteristics of the main characters, aiding their comprehension and retention. Set Purpose How will you set the purpose for reading, introduce the learning target, and/or connect to previous learning? Include dialogue you would use with the students (e.g., “Today as readers, we will...”). To set the purpose for reading, I will explain to the students that we are focusing on understanding the main characters of the story. I will introduce the learning target by saying, “Today, we will read the story of The Tale of Peter Rabbit. As we go through the reading, we will identify and describe the main characters in the story. Understanding the characters helps us enjoy and understand the story better. For example, we will meet a few characters and learn about what they do and who they are as individuals.” Model How will you highlight and model the learning target and reading strategy? Include specific examples of what you will say as you model the strategy. I will highlight and model the learning target by reading aloud the beginning of The Tale of Peter Rabbit and demonstrating how to identify and describe the main character. I will say, “Now, watch as I identify and describe the main character at the story's beginning. We have Peter Rabbit as our central character. He is curious and likes to explore. Now, think about another one we meet. Who can tell me about Peter's mother? Yes, she is caring and warns Peter about the dangers of Mr. McGregor's garden (Achwal, 2021). I will write this down on our character chart”. By modeling these steps, students can see how to identify and describe characters. Guided Practice How will you have students practice the strategy with their own reading text? How will you prompt students to use the reading strategy? Include dialogue you would use with the students. I will have students practice the strategy by continuing to read The Tale of Peter Rabbit together and prompting them to identify and describe the characters we encounter. I will say, “Let's read the next part of the story together. As we read, I want you to think about the characters we meet and what they are doing.
