Assignment Content The purpose of this assignment is to create 2 strategy group lesson plans that focus on a specific comprehension strategy: 1 lesson plan should teach/reinforce a comprehension strategy for a fiction text (e.g., retelling a story, identifying story elements, determining theme, supporting predictions with text evidence, etc.) 1 lesson plan should teach/reinforce a comprehension strategy for a nonfiction text (e.g., identifying main idea/supporting details, identifying text features, analyzing a specific text structure, summarizing, etc.) Read “How to Use Reading Strategy Groups in Your Classroom” from TeacherVision. Choose a grade level between kindergarten and third grade. Use the same grade level for both strategy group lessons. Develop your 2 lesson plans using the Strategy Group Lesson Plan Template. In addition to completing each section of the template, take note of the following additional requirements: Ensure that the learning target for both lesson plans have a specific comprehension skill (e.g., making inferences, making connections, asking questions, determining text importance, visualizing, etc.). Be sure that your comprehension focus is supported by the text you are using. For example, the learning target of “discern themes” would not be a good choice for most informational texts. Choose an authentic text for each of the lessons. Ensure that the primary focus of each lesson is practicing the comprehension strategy with the authentic text. Avoid the use of worksheets to practice the skill. Include dialogue that you will use when modeling the skill or supporting students as they use the skill. This should be represented in the Set Purpose, Model, and Guided Practice sections of the lesson plan template. Include evidence that shows you support students in using self-questioning as they read (e.g., a think-aloud where you model how to self-question to check your comprehension, prompting students to jot down questions they want to answer as they read, etc.). For example, we will meet a few characters and learn about what they do and who they are as individuals.” Model How will you highlight and model the learning target and reading strategy? Include specific examples of what you will say as you model the strategy. I will highlight and model the learning target by reading aloud the beginning of The Tale of Peter Rabbit and demonstrating how to identify and describe the main character. I will say, “Now, watch as I identify and describe the main character at the story's beginning. We have Peter Rabbit as our central character. He is curious and likes to explore. Now, think about another one we meet. Who can tell me about Peter's mother? Yes, she is caring and warns Peter about the dangers of Mr. McGregor's garden (Achwal, 2021). I will write this down on our character chart”. By modeling these steps, students can see how to identify and describe characters. Guided Practice How will you have students practice the strategy with their own reading text? How will you prompt students to use the reading strategy? Include dialogue you would use with the students. I will have students practice the strategy by continuing to read The Tale of Peter Rabbit together and prompting them to identify and describe the characters we encounter. I will say, “Let's read the next part of the story together. As we read, I want you to think about the characters we meet and what they are doing.
