Single-Factor Experimental Design: Does Phone Use before Bedtime Affect Sleep Patterns
Researchers use single factor experimental designs to try to study causal relationships. For example, if researchers want to know if an exercise intervention reduces depression, they might randomly assign some participants to receive the exercise intervention and others to not. They could collect baseline and post-intervention data and compare the two groups. If the treatment group showed a significantly greater reduction of depression than the control group, the researchers would conclude that the exercise intervention reduced depression.
Think of a topic of interest, and please respond to the following:
Create a research question and hypothesis.
Summarize how you would construct a single factor experimental study to test your hypothesis.
Describe the difference between using a between subjects design or a within subjects design for your study.
Discuss if you want to study this using a between subjects or within subjects design? Explain.

Research Methods Discussion
Single-factor experimental design is an experiment in which the level of one predictor variable is manipulated (Hoshmand, 2018). The topic of interest is to establish if phone use before bedtime affects sleep patterns.
A research question:
How does the number of minutes that a person takes in using their phone before sleep affect the number of hours they take in sleep?
Hypothesis:
Null hypothesis: The shorter the minutes one takes using their phone before sleep, the longer the sleeping hours.
Alternative hypothesis: The longer the minutes one takes using their phone before sleep, the shorter the sleeping hours.
The single factor experimental study can be constructed by randomly assigning ten participants to use phones for longer minutes before sleep and instructing the other ten participants to take shorter minutes in using phones before sleep. The two groups will be asked to record their sleeping duration. The baseline data will be the times taken by individuals who use shorter duration while using phones be...
