As a special educator, you will have many roles and responsibilities. Collaborate with your mentor teacher to reflect on the following professional roles and responsibilities of a special education teacher
Case managing and managing others, i.e., paraeducators, aides
Differentiating lesson plans with general education teachers
Legal and confidentiality concerns when working with students and families/caregivers
Conflict resolution among students and staff
Being involved beyond the classroom
Advocacy and mentoring students, families, and other colleagues
Lifelong learning and staying current on educational trends and legislation for special education
Any additional roles and responsibilities your mentor describes
Use any remaining field experience hours to assist the mentor teacher in providing instruction and support to the class.
After the discussion with your mentor, complete a 500-750 word reflection based on your findings. Discuss any new insights, areas of concerns, and what you feel you need to know more about as you complete your studies.
In addition, discuss what steps you will take to keep yourself informed on special education and how you plan to be a lifelong learner after you enter the classroom.

Special education is usually quite broad and sometimes delicate since it involves having to deal with various personalities. As a special educator, it is important to understand the various roles and responsibilities of the job. In my field experience, I spent 2 hours with my mentor teacher discussing and reflecting on these roles and responsibilities. As a special educator, one is tasked with ensuring that both learners and other teachers are on the same wavelength (Rodriguez & Murawski, 2020). This makes it easy for them to relate. In this essay, I will share my findings and insights and plan for my future professional practice.
Managing cases and other people, including paraeducators and assistants, was the first function we discussed. To guarantee that each student receives the required help, a special educator needs to be well-organized and be able to assign responsibilities efficiently. Additionally, effective management of others necessitates strong communication abilities, sensitivity, and in-depth knowledge of each student's needs. Differentiating lesson plans with teachers of general education is a further crucial responsibility. This ability calls for teamwork, innovation, and awareness of each student's talents and weaknesses (Parasher, 2021). I need to be able to collaborate with teachers of general education to develop inclusive lesson plans that are beneficial for all children as a special educator.
We also discussed legal and confidentiality issues when dealing with children, families, and caregivers. A special educator must protect all children's and their families' privacy and confidentiality. Understanding educational regulations, policies, and the moral ramifications of handling sensitive data is necessary for this strategy.
