Working with young children with Autism Spectrum Disorder is based upon nurturing positive and professional relationships with parents and family members. Better outcomes for children, better collaboration with parents, and better work for educators and professionals can be engendered out of a supportive environment. It is crucial to have trust with open communication for both the child and the family. If family and professionals work together, the child’s development will benefit immensely as they have a better chance to work out an effective and individualized way of supporting the child.
There are a few things that need to be embodied by a professional working with children with autism. First, patience is very important, as ASD children might take more time and different approaches whilst learning and communicating. Second, it needs to be able to communicate well with the child and their family in order to transfer the information clearly while listening to parents’ concerns (Johnson, 2020). Effective communication also means using language that anyone can understand and that families grasp entirely what is being done. Thirdly, flexibility is needed as professionals need to devise a different strategy for each child depending on his respective needs and reactions (Simpson, 2005). This is because ASD comes in different ways in each child, and flexibility in methods and interventions is needed to fit their individual strengths and weaknesses.
