Quantifying Research Problems
Quantitative research requires quantification of variables related to specific problems under investigation. As you brainstorm your dissertation or research project, it is good to begin thinking about what could be quantified for a research topic. Even if you do not plan to conduct quantitative research for your research, thinking about how variables are quantified can help with other research methodologies.
Later in the course, you will develop a quantitative mini-project using data based on validated instruments from three hypothetical scenarios. See the Learning Objects page for the datasets associated with the three scenarios.
Choose one of these scenarios. You will create a fictional context around the data relevant to your own interests and use that context to guide the development of your mini-project throughout the rest of the course.
Scenario #1: Nurses across several units in a community hospital have completed a validated survey called the CARES instrument to assess environmental affordance of nursing tasks in healthcare settings (Rich et al., 2021).
Scenario #2: Teachers in a suburban school district have completed a validated survey called the DET Needs instrument to determine and assess their needs concerning design, engineering, and technology (DET) education (Yasar et al., 2006).
Scenario #3: Archival data of 2 years of standardized test scores in core subjects for students in Grades 7-12 in an urban school district are available.
Develop an original response to the following questions:
Based on the source articles for scenarios #1 or #2, or based on hypothetical standardized test scores in scenario #3, what are the data trying to measure? Attitudes, knowledge, beliefs, or something else?
Which scales of measurement are being used in the scenario you chose (nominal, ordinal, interval, ratio)?
Why does this scenario interest you, and how does it relate (even tangentially) to your professional context and potential dissertation or research project direction?

Chosen Scenario
Nurses across several units in a community hospital have completed a validated survey called the CARES instrument to assess the environmental affordance of nursing tasks in healthcare settings (Rich et al., 2021).
Fictional Context
A suburban community hospital is grappling with increasing job dissatisfaction among its nurses, which is related to the physical layout and design of the hospital. This situation has been further exacerbated by recent policies that advocate for streamlining patient care. To address this issue, an administrative team at the hospital has conducted a study utilizing the CARES instrument to assess the work environment. It will determine the extent to which environmental factors influence nurses in performing important tasks such as monitoring patients, giving medication, or managing emergency cases. Data obtained should provide information for renovation or changes in policies in order to improve the hos...
