Essay Instructions:
Understanding the progression of learning standards across grade levels can help teachers plan lessons to better meet the needs of their students. When students are struggling in an area, knowing the knowledge and skills students should have learned before moving on to the next standard can help teachers understand how to support these students and fill any holes in knowledge they may have. If a student has already mastered the grade-level standard, knowing what learning comes next will help teachers provide opportunities for continued learning or enrichment.
For this assignment, select three state standards for the grade level of your choice (preschool-Grade 3). Complete the “State Standard Flow Chart ” by including the standard from the prior age/grade level that supports the selected standard and the standard for the next grade level that builds on the standard you selected. These three standards demonstrate the progression of learning from one grade to the next.
Choose one of your selected standards to deconstruct. In the chart, you will deconstruct the standard you have selected to include:
Grade level, standard, and main verbs.
Big Ideas - What do you want the students to take from this standard for years to come? What should students know and be able to do based on the standard?
Essential Questions – What questions will guide learners to understand the content? Essential questions are the core questions that allow students to probe for deeper meaning. They are the questions that students should be asking as they explore the main ideas of the standard.
Measurable Learning Objective - The objectives are the understandings, insights, or skills students are expected to develop by the end of this lesson. Setting clear objectives helps students understand the purpose of the work ahead.
Depth of Knowledge level.
Suggested whole group instructional activity.
You will be using the standard you have selected in future assignments to develop different parts of a lesson plan to be completed in Topic 6.
In a 150-250 word reflection, discuss the following:
Why is it important for early childhood educators to be knowledgeable about the standards prior to and following the grade level that they teach?
How can understanding prior and subsequent grade level standards help in planning to meet the needs of students who are above or below grade level?
Support your response with 2-3 scholarly resources.
While APA Style format is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and in-text citations and references should be presented using documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.
