Philosophy of Teaching and Learning
Learning and teaching is a lifelong process and evolved extensively from conventional practices because of emerging technologies and significant demand for critical thinking. Thereby, teachers play an inspiring role in shaping student’s personality and thinking capabilities based on their capabilities, educational philosophy, skills, and influences. Moreover, teachers are responsible for understanding students' differences and using appropriate strategies to improve their knowledge and experience. In this manner, the positive and constructivist learning approach performs exceptionally to advance lifelong outcomes with the progressivism philosophy. By elaborating my teaching and learning philosophy statement, I aim to bring critical thinking, creativity, a positive attitude, and quality learning to class sessions, where I am responsible for encouraging students in relating their theoretical understanding with practical and social experiences to foster in-depth thinking and develop innovative personality traits. As an inspirational teacher, I am accountable for offering supreme value to students with all my expertise to address critical issues in real-life situations.
By reflecting on my teaching and learning philosophy, I consider the teaching and learning process a two-way approach, where teachers and students learn together. To create a better relationship, the teacher needs to develop a collaborative learning environment where students can question and enhance critical thinking. As per my teaching values, I prefer the constructivist-learning approach to boost individual skills with depth thinking, intellectual focus, and interest. Henceforth, my teaching philosophy stimulates practical learning with a solid understanding of theories and concepts to explore real-life examples with creative and analytical skills (Şahan & Terzi, 2015). Pointing out the mentioned statement, I believe that my teaching methodology is purposive to evolve individual critical-thinking capabilities instead of rote learning, which advances student’s future opportunities in the desired profession.
Simultaneously, I observed that no best teaching style perfectly fits each student's case because of differing personalities and learning capabilities. Therefore, experimenting with different approaches is the key to successful teaching philosophy, and I adopted the same with the progressivism teaching philosophy. Contemporary teachers immensely adopt this educational philosophy to capture students' attention and maximize their interest level in-class sessions with rational examples. Subsequently, I foster a student-oriented culture in class, where they are motivated to involve in debates and share their opinions about scientific controversies and cases. This practice helps students develop rationalization skills and expand multidimensional knowledge to apply complex issues concepts. Moreover, the collaborative and innovative learning environment allows students to learn from teachers and fellows for in-depth understanding.
By observing the growing interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programs among students and related backgrounds, I came up with the perfect, concise, and expressive teaching philosophy. I describe my teaching philosophy as progressive because my focus is on teaching interdisciplinary subjects with practical learning to experience the theoretical understandings with real-world examples. According to Moyo (2017), progressivism philosophy encourages learners to discover, explore problems, participate in group activities, and value discussion. With the adoption collaborative teaching style, I motivate students to explore and engage in critical thinking with collaborative learning and integrate their knowledge to resolve the environment's identified issues. This approach is fundamental for personal growth and skill development because it helps them apply their knowledge practically. As a teacher, my responsibility is to widen students' learning scope with modern tools and strategies to adapt to changes in the external environment and be open to experimenting with new ideas out of their comfort zones.
By observing the learning theories, progressivism philosophy embraces cognitive and social constructivism to connect an individual with social issues to think analytically for resolving the identified complexities. In a particular learning approach, teachers structured education models to improve students' knowledge for expanding their cognitive abilities and practice collaborative activities in the class sessions for proximal development. For improving cognitive abilities, I motivate students individually to adopt innovation and learn new skills for personal benefits. However, social interaction stimulates students intrinsically and externally to discover the changes in modern society and apply learned tools and theories in the practical context. In the following learning and teaching approach, teachers act optimistically to adopt the metacognitive practices and tutorials to guide students accordingly. Moreover, coaching with experiments and case analysis will boost their soc...
