The six-hour volunteer allowed students to observe and apply what they learned in their courses in hands-on experiences. I participated in the Office of Exceptional Student Services program for children with disabilities. This opportunity significantly impacted my frames of reference and grounded my determination to become a special education teacher.
Personal Frames
The fact that each child has a specific set of abilities that differentiates them as people who are markedly different from one another, regardless of their language, race, or gender, astounds me. Working in this specific setting refined my beliefs about the value of tailoring activities to the needs of individual special needs children. Although Kong (2015) states independent learners remain easy to instruct, I feel challenged to achieve more in a challenging environment.
