WRITING WORKSHOP ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS OVERVIEW A teacher’s ability to invent creative and engaging writing prompts will promote writing. There is a variety of writing prompts: journal writing, biographical writing, expository writing, narrative writing, descriptive writing, persuasive writing, and poetry will be examined for this assignment. Before creating a prompt, a teacher must consider which grade level and Virginia State Standard of Learning will be addressed. When creating the prompt, the teacher must give the opportunity for the students to meet state learning standards, have clear instructions, and guides for creative expression. INSTRUCTIONS You will create writing prompts and a rubric for this assignment using the Writing Workshop Template. The writing prompts you create will be seven in total – one for each of the following types of writing: journal writing, biographical writing, expository writing, narrative writing, descriptive writing, persuasive writing, and poetry. Each prompt must include a complete set of directions that guides the students to complete each writing prompt independently. Describe what is expected; include topic, length, and brainstorming ideas. Consider carefully the grade level of each writing prompt, making it developmentally appropriate. For example, you do not want to ask a Kindergartener to write a paragraph, but rather a sentence with an accompanying word bank and/or picture. Follow the directions carefully below:  Choose a Virginia Standard of Learning (SOL) for grades K-8 for each prompt, without using the same SOL twice. A link to the Virginia SOLs for English has been provided with this assignment.  Find a similar national standard that aligns with your SOL. A link to the National Council of Teachers of English Standards for Reading and Writing has been provided with this assignment.  Each prompt is to be written for a different grade level.  After you have completed all seven prompts, select one of the writing prompts and develop a grading rubric. A link to RubiStar, an optional rubric generating tool, has been provided with this assignment.  If you use additional sources for ideas and content, please use citations and a references list per the current APA requirements.
