ELL students need effective instruction in every content area because in the absence of home language instruction, “all content areas are taught in English…” (Wright, 2015). It is, therefore, important to ensure that instruction in every content area is provided so that the students have some form of background information on specific concepts. This will help them understand the concepts better when they learn them in other content areas. Failure to provide effective instruction will not only deny the student the chance to build on the background information on a concept but it will also affect their understanding of certain vocabulary that is specific to some content areas, such as science vocabulary. Such vocabulary could be familiar to English speakers but foreign to ELLs.
