How is mathematical reasoning different from other types of reasoning?
Reasoning is the act of thinking about something or a phenomenon sensibly and logically. Among the different types of reasoning, mathematical reasoning is unique because it combines deductive and inductive reasoning (Wilkinson, Bailey, & Maher, 2018). The former allows for logical arguments, application of generalizations, and concluding the two. Elimination of unreasonable possibilities is part of this aspect of reasoning. On the other hand, inductive reasoning involves making generalizations from patterns. Mathematics has unique or combined problems that either require one form of reasoning separately or rely on both for established conclusions.
