Learner Needs Analysis in Instructional Design
Societies worldwide are littered with proverbs emphasizing the need for diligent preparation before action. Unsurprisingly, it certainly is the case in the instructional context that attempting to understand various aspects of the learner allows the instructor to prepare for a more effective teaching and learning experience. Understanding the learner’s needs and motivations is one of the most important factors in designing effective instruction (Harper, 2021). This is done through needs analysis, a process for identifying an individual’s specific learning needs. To effectively design instruction, it is essential to understand the learner’s needs. According to Harper (2021), this process, known as needs analysis, uses various methods to gather information about an individual’s learning style, current knowledge, skills, and how they learn best. This information is then used to create an instructional plan meeting the learner’s needs.

Second, it helps identify potential gaps in the learner’s knowledge or skills and provide guidance on addressing these issues (Attard & Holmes, 2020). Finally, it helps ensure that the learner gains the most from their educational experience by guiding how to improve their learning skills.

I have come to appreciate that effective instruction is about meeting the learner’s needs and tailoring the learning experience to ensure they achieve their desired outcomes. By taking the time and effort to conduct a needs analysis, one can ensure that their learners receive the best instruction tailored to their needs (Attard & Holmes, 2020). For instance, reflection and reaction can help learners explore their current knowledge and skills and use this information to improve their learning experience (Chang, 2019; Kostiainen et al., 2018). As such, instruction ...
