The development of electronic health is another aspect of the technological changes that have encompassed all aspects of modern life. EHR is the information system arm in medical care provision that makes it possible to have the entire patient’s information in a centralized digital form thus making response quick and thus making the health care provision more effective. It is a longitudinal electronic record that is collated on the patient’s information in health care giving settings, Allan and Englebright (2000). Such information is comprehensive and gives all possible details on the patient thus guiding the clinician’s response during a consequent medial issue. To fully conceptualize the EHRs one needs to examine the concept itself.
The EHR system forms a complex interlace of data exchange between different arms of the medical care provision. The patient’s encounter with care generates data that is then digitalized in one central hub and then redistributed to the main departments of a hospital such as the administration, lab, clinical radiology, pharmacy among others. This process is cyclical because any feedback from these departments is redirected to the hub which is called the EHR network for safekeeping. Within his network or the central database, all aspects of safe data keeping such as registry, management, security and indexing are incorporated. In essence, any piece of information about the patient that is received is stored for later reference.
