Informatics is a discipline that deals with resources, apparatus, and methods needed to optimize the achievement, storage, recovery and application of information in health and medicine. Informatics tools involve computers, clinical guidelines, medical terminologies and also information and communication schemes. Nursing informatics involves combination of nursing skills with computer knowledge. Specialists in nursing informatics manage and pass nursing data and information to advance decision making by clients, patients, nurses and all health care providers (Slack & Slack, 2001).
The change that nursing informatics will make in the next 5-10 years
Slack & Slack (2001) maintains that in the next five to ten years, nursing informatics will help in retrieving of patients’ data very easily because it helps in keeping updated and relevant data of various patients and it is usually in a systematic and a manner which is accessible. This means that a lot of time will not be wasted as before when retrieval was done manually hence delaying the services.
