A business unit is mainly responsible to the environment in which it operates. This is because the environment in which a business operates has a direct effect on the operations of the business and that of other businesses within the surrounding. Today, it is argued that, any business, however little, should be environment cautious. Increased pressure from the environmental lawyers and environment management committees has forced business units to operate as more eco-friendly enterprises. This is in contrast to what was the status quo some few years back. Many businesses have largely contributed to environmental pollution over the years especially those in the production industry. Worthington and Britton reveal that over 30 percent of the total gas emissions are believed to be from industries (Worthington & Britton, 2000, p. 78).
Businesses tend to have high electricity operation costs. This tends to work against any business as it cuts into their profits. In addition, businesses are also paper hungry. Efforts have been put in place to encourage paperless offices. Businesses on their part have been forced to invest in greener technologies in compliance with international policies on green technology (Morrison, Morrison 2011).
