Sigmund Freud theory focuses on the child development. The theorist poses that child development occurs in a series of stages focusing on different areas of pleasures within the body. The child tends to encounter conflicts that play significant roles in the course of development. It is one of the most controversial in that during this stage the energies of the id get erogenous in certain areas thus becomes the driving force behind the child’s behavior. Sigmund asserts that, at the complete end of these stages, the child acquires unhealthy personality. If not resolved at the appropriate stage, this may lead to fixation. Fixation refers to the prolong focus on early psychosexual stage. An individual can remain at this stage, for example, if an individual is fixed at the tender or oral stage, is forced to be over dependent on other and tend to look for oral stimulation via smoking, eating or drinking (Pinsof & Lebow, 2005).
Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development is best known for an individual personality in the study of psychology. Erikson believes that personality develops in a series of stages. It describes the impacts of social encounters as cutting across individuals’ lifespan. Smart (2011) says that, the main focal area of Erikson’s theory is the development of ego which is the conscious sense of selfness in the social life. The ego identity changes with life experience and information one accesses in every day’s interpersonal relation. Besides ego identity, a sense of competence drives behavior and deeds. This theory places most of its concerns competence in life. Whereby if well handled, the individual gets honor in life which is termed as ego strength, but if poorly managed, there is a sense of lessen in life.
Similarities and Significant of the Theories
The course of personality and social development in both Sigmund and Erikson highlights most of strength in life. Even though they focus on different developmental areas and personality that builds the foundation of life, they are still similar in many ways. In each stage of the theories, Erikson believes that individuals encounter conflicts that hand out turning point in development. This evolves into development of psychological quality and under development of an individual’s life (Warner & Sower, 2005).
