From time to time this semester, you have been asked to investigate the rec sport offerings of three colleges or universities of your choice. You have also gradually built up a knowledge of the ways rec sports professionals define their professional self-identities; approach programming; build and manage facilities; manage risk; seek to positively impact campus, curriculum, and community; research and assess their industry; keep people safe; and more. Time to put the two together.
Imagine you have been tasked by NIRSA (National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association), to review and evaluate the recreational sport programming and facilities of your chosen colleges and/or universities. Unfortunately, due to NIRSA's limited budget, site visits are out of the question. You must therefore rely on their web and social media presences in conjunction with your own reading and research.
Prepare for NIRSA a comprehensive evaluation of two (2) of your three chosen rec sports programs. Use categories, metrics, and/or concepts we have read about. (For instance, “facilities,” “virtual programming,” “co-curricular impact,” “risk management,” “community outreach,” “marketing,” etc.) Evaluate each program in at least four such categories.
As with our previous assignment, flexibility of design will be permitted and creativity of approach will be rewarded. Choose categories for which your chosen programs offer sufficient public-facing information to evaluate. As long as each institution is evaluated in four categories, the categories need not be the same for each institution. As long as your chosen categories are clearly rooted in course materials and/or discussions, they will be deemed acceptable. Remember that you have the NIRSA textbook and other readings to draw on, and that you have each examined recent research in the field.
