Action Research Definition and Experience
According to Clark et al. (2020), action research is a means of inquiry often used by educators to resolve a problem they face and work towards improving their practice. Through action research, there is a reflective cycle for the practitioner to identify the problem, collect the data, implement the solution, and then evaluate the results for further refinement of practices (Clark et al., 2020). In my first-grade classroom, I have encountered situations where students struggled with reading comprehension. An action research cycle was thus considered in order to solve this problem. To address this, I sought information about general engagement levels throughout lessons, tried new strategies such as interactive read-aloud, and monitored their progress. This experience is an example of action research since, based on what worked best for them, I was able to try different teaching methods.
