What Is the Endrew F. Supreme Court Case? Why Is It an Important Special Education Decision?
The Endrew F. Supreme Court Case involved a young autistic child in fourth grade in a Colorado pre-school. Despite having an individualized education program (IEP) year after year, the goals and services were almost similar. As a result, this child was not making functional or educational progress. As a result, the parent contested the IEP, arguing that it was not helping Endrew in any way ("Endrew F. & IEP standards," n.d.). When the case was brought before the Supreme Court, it rejected an earlier ruling by the Tenth Circuit's standard, arguing that the IEP was only providing this learner 'merely more than de minimis.' On this note, the ruling of the case shaped the formulation of IEP for children with special education as it required that FAPE should create an IEP that reasonably calculates how to help a child make the right progress. That is, a good IEP should ensure a student's current functioning as well as specific educational needs are addressed accordingly.
