BACTERIA AND ENERGY ACQUISITION
Q1. Some bacteria acquire energy from sunlight. Would you expect these bacteria to have chlorophyll? Explain.
It is plants that largely use energy from sunlight to produce sugar from carbon dioxide and water in a process known as photosynthesis. In this process, plant chloroplasts remove hydrogen from the water molecules and with the use of green coloring matter called chlorophyll, trap energy from sunlight which they combine with carbon dioxide and water to provide nutrients to organisms.
However, it is not only the plants that are exclusive to this process.Bacterias too acquire energy from sunlight. An example is the purple bacteria, found in the phylum proteobacterium, which convert sunlight into energy. However, unlike in plants, they cannot be expected to have chlorophyll as we know it in plants. These bacteria instead, use an alternative pigment known as bacteriochlorophyll.Although this pigment is closely related to chrolophyll,it is not exactly like the chlorophyll in plants hence one would not expect bacteria that derive energy from sunlight to have chlorophyll(Wassenaar,2012).
Q2.What is special about ATP? How does a cell release energy from ATP? Provide a non-biological analogy to describe the process.
