Effective decision making strategies for Team and Team Leaders

Overview of the topic
Team decision making involves more strategies than individual decision making. In teams, decision is often used by the help of consensus, this mean that the members of the team first discuss the problem, within the team and then the decision is made through informal voting, where the majority of votes of team members are considered.
Successful and business focused organizations have set effective decision making as their core objectives. Many teams operating within an organization have to struggle for an effective decision making result, as they lack in methods which may help them to eliminate unnecessary options. Time is considered as a valuable asset in almost every organization; therefore it is necessary that a defined decision making process must be designed that would save the team from irrelevant arguments and produce effective decisions.
When the decision needed to be made is complicated and important for the future of the organization, a few members of the organization are assigned the task of forming a committee in order to study the issue in detail. When the committee has studied the issue they turn back to the team and explain them the situation and ask for their recommendation on the decision made.
Three trend discussed in most of the researches about team decision making
Participation of Members
Team based decision is based on the fact that the opinion of each member is considered and respected. Team members who are less assertive do not speak up as they think that their opinions are much different form rest of the team members. The assertive members of the team get most of the attention, as they express their opinions freely.
The team leader must ask the team members to think about the topic individually and then each and every member of the team must be asking to give their individual opinions. In this way the less assertive member of the team are also given a chance of expressing their opinions. Benefit of this trend of team decision making is that the opinion of every team member is acknowledged and the leaders are exposed to different opinions, which may help them to make profitable decisions for the firm. CITATION SGR02 \l 1033 (Rogelberg, O'Connor, & Sederburg, 2002)
Group Priority for Team Leaders
Team leaders, while dealing with their team are exposed to diverse opinions. Individuals in teams have different opinions and there is no such objective framework present, for the team members to follow. In such cases Nominal Group Technique can work as an effective tool of providing the team with framework that would help them to rank the priorities and choose best among the Alternatives.
Research gives evidence that the people who shout the loudest or those who have higher status their opinion is considered more that the views of others. According to Nominal Group techniques, the consensus must be held face to face if the Team leaders are in search of an effective result. CITATION Gil91 \l 1033 (Gill, 1991)
