Why We Assess Social-Emotional Functioning and Adaptive Behavior
The reason assessing a person’s social-emotional functioning and adaptive behavior are believed to be important is because the two help ensure a clear comprehension of an individual’s overall development and well-being. Additionally, the significance of both assessments is captured in that their importance is defined by what each assessment method stands for. First, examining a person’s social-emotional functioning is detailed since it captures an individual’s ability to regulate their emotions, interact well with their surroundings, and be in a better position to form positive relationships with others (Salvia et al., 2017b). The same level of importance is reflected in the definition of what assessing adaptive behavior involves. In this context, adaptive behavior focuses on one’s ability to succeed in one's daily endeavors, mainly caring for oneself and socializing and communicating with others.
Four Methods of Assessing Social-Emotional and Adaptive Behavior
When examining a person’s social-emotional functioning and adaptive behavior, four methods are used singly or as a combination. These methods are interview techniques, observation procedures, rating scales, and situational measures (Salvia et al., 2017a). Whether a method will be used singly or a combination is defined by what type of information assessors want to gather about an individual’s social and emotional functioning. The first method of direct observation is preferred because it is associated with generally accurate data; interview techniques are used mainly by experienced professionals; parents, teachers, or peers usually administer rating scales because they have better information about the student; and lastly, situational measures involve the use of reasonable activities.
