ANNOTATION OF A QUALITATIVE RESEARCH ARTICLE

Essay Instructions:
Submit: Annotation of a Qualitative Research Article This week, you will submit the annotation of a qualitative research article on a topic of your interest. Narrative, ethnographic, grounded theory, case study, and phenomenology are examples of types of research designs or approaches used in qualitative research. An annotation consists of three separate paragraphs that cover three respective components: summary, analysis, and application. These three components convey the relevance and value of the source. As such, an annotation demonstrates your critical thinking about, and authority on, the source topic. This week’s annotation is a precursor to the annotated bibliography assignment due in Week 10. An annotated bibliography is a document containing selected sources accompanied by a respective annotation of each source. In preparation for your own future research, an annotated bibliography provides a background for understanding a portion of the existing literature on a particular topic. It is also a useful first step in gathering sources in preparation for writing a subsequent literature review as part of a dissertation. Please review the assignment instructions below and click on the underlined words for information about how to craft each component of an annotation. Please use the document "Annotated Bibliography Template with Example" for additional guidance. Annotation of a Qualitative Research Article Name of the Student Institutional Affiliation Course Code and Course Name Professor Date of Submission Annotation of a Qualitative Research Article Summary The qualitative research article titled "They Can't Control the Students: A Qualitative Inquiry into the Perceptions of Student Involvement for Black Men at Predominantly White Institutions in the Midwest” provides a deeper look into the lived experiences of black male students in college settings. As this study uses a phenomenological approach, it is ideal for addressing the subjective experiences of individuals. By conducting semi-structured interviews with seven self-identified Black men attending public predominantly white institutions (PWI) in the Midwest, the researchers were able to capture the complexities of Black men's experiences with rich and detailed narratives. The primary research goal was to prevent guessing how these students view their role on campus and comprehend how their social identities (especially race and male or female) impact their participation in different things. The study's findings are grouped around three central themes. At first, their involvement is motivated by a desire for a community, personal growth, and the attainment of academic success. Moreover, the problems encountered by these students in these events within the campus community are suggestive of systemic barriers, including racial macroaggressions, prejudice, exclusion, and low participation in power positions (Johnson & Best, 2024). Finally, Johnson and Best (2024) posit that there is a perceived lack of institutional support further reinforces the absence or shortage of resources and programs that support Black male students' successful experience in college. The study calls for greater awareness and consideration of Black men's challenges within higher education institutions. To this end, it advocates for more inclusive practices within PWIs so marginalized students feel a sense of belonging and support, enabling their academic success and personal development (Johnson & Best, 2024). The research amplifies the voices of Black male students and asks for a reexamination of current policies and practices to make the educational environment more equitable. Analysis This article represents a significant step towards existing literature on student involvement and engagement, particularly from a critical race theory (CRT) perspective. The authors use CRT to disrupt the dominant...
