1776 Report Analysis
Introduction
The 1776 Report was developed by the president’s advisory committee recently to actualize patriotism in education. The President’s Advisory 1776 Commission was made of several authors. This report is grounded in historical context. The 1776 Report denotes momentous points in history, i.e., the year 1776 when the U.S declared its independence from the tentacle of Great Britain colonial control. The authors encapsulate broader thematic arguments. These propositions cover challenges facing America and consequential renewed hope post-independence. The authors' arguments in this paper could be clouded in biases and lack of clarity due to contemporary political and socio-economic diversities. The 18-member commission was comprised of conservative activists, politicians and intellectuals. However, the report had no professional historians of the U.S. The lack of authoritative professionals such as historians cast doubts on the credibility of the report.
Furthermore, the report lacks authoritative sources and references to back up various claims in the report. The lack of philosophical approach to understanding deeper issues explains the development the report. Thus, the report was advanced to create more understanding of nationhood issues. Certain ideologies such as fascism that conflict with its attitudes, beliefs and perceptions on people’s freedoms and rights has continued to cause trouble in U.S and abroad. It is based on this challenge that a more revamped education system on history is needed to gain proper understanding of these issues. Quantz (2016, p.74) cites philosophical dissection of historical issues as a potent approach to proper analysis and interpretation of contexts regarding various socio-political and economic themes such as racism, communism, slavery and fascism, amongst many more.
This report captures such a historical moment to capture a sense of independence, liberalism, freedom, equality and patriotism as members of a unified state. The historical implications in this report highlight human developmental challenges. Thus, the president’s advisory committee, led people to understand the historical values and principles encapsulated in the U. S declaration of independence in 1976. This report seeks to reinvigorate American education with real, honest, unifying, inspiring spirit, renewed American unity and culture based on shared identity rooted in founding principles. Such rejuvenation of education cannot be achieved without a well thought plan. Quantz (2016, p.72) argues that the philosophical approach to learning about anything should be geared towards compressive and in-depth teaching. Such approach should focus on allowing learning to focus on the diversity of habits, techniques and ideas, without being constrained on specific norms or notions. For instance, challenges such as fascism should be examined under broader context. Fascism should not be examined within a narrow lens, which focuses on dictatorial tendencies and suppression of opposition based on arguably bias ideologies involving liberties and freedoms. Examining challenges such as fascism across multifaceted viewpoints elicit a broader understanding. A broader understanding allows learning to comprehend issues that relate to fascism, including rising nationalism, communism and Marxism.
Critical Analysis of the Content of the Report
This paper will focus on racism and fascism as two fundamental themes. The foundation of America was based on the principles of liberty, independence and freedom. However, the U.S community is increasingly faced with a myriad of challenges such as racism and fascism. This paper demonstrates that thematic challenges involving racism and fascism are increasingly a threat to U.S national principles (1776 Presidential Report, p.10-12); thereby, there is an urgent need to restore the founding principles and values by propping up education. Fascism involves a far-right, authoritarian ultranationalism featuring dictatorial power, a clampdown of opposition, and increased regimentation of economy and society (1776 Presidential Report, p.14). The authors argue that the principles and values espoused in the Declaration of Independence are threatened at home and abroad.
The authors of the 1776 Report postulate that fascism and Communism were bitter enemies which as deployed as approaches to gain global domination. Fascism, which often appeared with communism, derived its negative connotation due to its totalitarianism and disdain people’s rights and freedom. Dictatorial leaders such as Benito Mussolini centralized powers, restricted individual freedoms. Authors argue that with the emergence of Adolf Hitler in G...
