Focus on studies that use neuroimaging techniques to investigate your chosen aspect of addiction or substance use.
Article Selection Criteria
Select three research journal articles that meet the following criteria:
Published within the last seven years to ensure the currency of the research.
Employs neuroimaging techniques such as CT scans, PET scans, EEG, MRI, fMRI, TMS, etc., to investigate addiction-related changes in the brain. You must choose at least two different types of neuroimaging.
Provides insights into the specific aspect of addiction or substance use you have chosen.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS).

MRI reveals significant shrinking of the mammillary bodies in individuals with Korsakoff's syndrome (KS). MRI reveals mild shrinkage in the mammillary bodies, thalami, and hippocampi in individuals with uncomplicated alcohol use. MRI further indicates a reduction of the lateral ventricles during abstinence from alcohol. DTI shows increased mean diffusivity (MD) for individuals with Central Pontine Myelinolysis (CPM) indicating damage to the brain's white-matter. DTI demonstrates Significant shrinkage of the tissue-volume in the orbitofrontal cortices during alcohol abstinence. MRS reports lower levels of NAA in uncomplicated alcoholism and normalization of the NAA levels in the cerebellar and frontal regions of the brain for recovering alcoholics.

Relying on water signal limits its efficacy to identify microstructural effects of alcohol addiction to the human brain. DTI's strength is the ability to detect the anisotropic movement of water protons along the axis of a fiber in the brain making it possible to evaluate damage to the brain through the analysis of the axonal integrity. DTI is only limited to the detection of axonal integrity. MRS key strength is its ability to detect chemical shifts or signals from brain's metabolites providing a wider scope of understanding the extent of brain damage from alcoholism and other addictions.
