In “Ruminations on Lo Sucio as a Latino Queer Analytic," Deborah R. Vargas outlines the derogatory stereotypes endured by Latinos who are identified as queer. The author states that this group is not only viewed as deviant and unproductive for refusing to conform to normative sexual relations but is also regarded as dirty, nasty, and filthy (Vargas, 2014). Latino queers are regarded as a surplus population, and their dehumanized meeting places are constantly under threat of gentrification as part of a broader cleanup effort of populations and spaces that are considered wasteful by a normative and heterosexual general populace. Various social and economic agendas of scapegoating Latino gays and transsexuals as violators of nation and race have seen the group suffer hetero- and homonormativity violence geared towards eliminating all traces, smells, and colors of queer worlds.
