In this essay, Mckinney-Maddalena presents to you an argument for the correct use of the "I" voice in academic writing and in particular the argument essay. This ties to what you read in Graff on meta-text. But it also provides you with the correct way to use the I voice in your argument essay.
Read it at least two times. Even if you read it in WRI 121, you are reading with new eyes to argument skills. Use your critical college reading skills to highlight important points and ideas from this essay. Pay close attention to the essay and how ideas/argument presented are by this writer because she presents an academic argument here AND gives directions on how to employ the "I" voice. I will use her guidelines on the use of "I" voice as I read and score your essays.
Once you have read the essay then do the following:
1. WRITE a 400 to 500 word formal/stand alone summary of two of the sections in this assigned reading. Choose two sections from those listed below: (Note that if you have done this summary in 121 choose different sections this time). IMPORTANT: Read the other instructional documents in this module that provide information on how to write these formal/stand alone summaries.

In this section, Maddalena (2010) responds to the common argument against the use of the “I” voice in academic writing, which is the issue of bias and credibility. She also notes that the use of the “I” voice appropriately enhances the objectivity and the integrity of the writing. The appropriate use of “I” brings improved academic writing. At the same time, it retains the objective, academic point of view. Maddalena shows how first person pronouns create a writer’s voice, in scientific academic writing. Research methods use observer effect ideas to show that scientists alter the results of the experiment due to their active involvement in the research process. Authors use pronouns that demonstrate their direct participation in the research process. The research methodology enhances the study’s credibility because it shows how researchers arrive at their conclusions through engagement in the research process than a distant theoretical outlook. Writers who identify themselves justify their arguments to support the validity of their findings. In this way, writers acknowledge their contribution to research, thus making the academic paper more credible.
