Operation Anaconda Under the Seven Principles of Mission Command
Operation Anaconda happened in March 2002 in the Shah-i-Kot Valley in Afghanistan. The U.S. and coalition forces encountered a well-equipped adversary in steep terrain and unfavorable conditions. It was among the earliest mass conventional military actions of the Afghanistan War and was based on the joint, coalition, and Afghan forces and a common command order. Instead, the premises of the planning undervalued the strengths of the enemy and overestimated the woman power of the partner forces, which influenced the battle. This paper posits that Operation Anaconda demonstrated the strengths and weaknesses of Mission Command: competence, trust, and initiative allowed the operation to succeed, and poor execution in the early stages was due to poor shared understanding and unclear mission intent.
Competence
Competence is capability to organize and take action. American and allied forces engaged in active tactical battle in Anaconda, U.S. Little-unit leaders improvised fire and maneuver. However, the initial arrangements were characterized by poor ability to harmonize and be intelligent. Commanders overestimated the enemy power and the nature of the terrain (Midla, 2004). These operations mistakes compelled subsequent changes of tactics. As Knevelsrud (2024) states, every level of competence underpins Mission Command through the ability to operate based on purpose, rather than the micromanagement of units. Anaconda demonstrated that there is no point in having tactical skill without a competence in planning that must be comparable to reality in the battle field.
Mutual Trust
Mutual trust refers to the fact that the leaders and the subordinates depend on each other in judgment. At Anaconda this confidence came into question. U.S. commanders relied on junior commanders in order to adjust themselves quickly when Afghan allies up-pitched. Platoon leaders relocated troops, ordered air strikes, and altered plans without consultation. Their initiative sustained the mission.
