House of Cards is a political thriller series that revolves around the lives of a congressman and his wife, Frank and Claire Underwood, who live in Washington, D.C. The fifth instalment in the series describes some of the complexities that arise as the characters seek to win the 2016 presidential election (Netflix, 2017). One specific element of the shot design that was interesting in the trailer for the series is the use of light and shadow, and it had been used to enhance the appeal of the story.
The lights and shadows are highly detailed and minimal. It relies on practical light sources as a way of taking advantage of the available low light. The low lightning relies on deep blacks, darker tones, and different shadows. For instance, various shots are made where the individuals are not visible, just their shadows.
