Using the characteristics of “Communication Competence”, evaluate your communication competence in the context of one interpersonal relationship in which you are involved.
How did you learn which emotions it was acceptable for you to express? Do you think what you were taught reflects gender expectations? Cultural expectations?
Think of an interaction where you felt disconfirmed and defensive. Describe how others in the situation communicated toward you. How many of Gibb’s defensive-producing communication behaviors can you identity as present in the situation?

Communication Competence: This is an individual's ability to be able to adopt an appropriate communication behavior to suit a certain situation. Interpersonal competency allows an individual to get the desired communication goals without having to discredit or lose touch with the other individual in the conversation. The component model is used mostly to create a description for competence. It consists of three models, namely, skill, knowledge and motivation. Knowledge is the ability to identify the communication behavior to use in a certain situation, skill is the ability to apply that behavior effectively, and motivation is the drive to communicate effectively.
For instance when a young man approaches an elder man, the young man should be able to identify a communication behavior that would make their conversation comfortable for both himself and the elder man. For instance, he might decide to use a topic in their conversation that the elderly man can relate to. The young man should also be well conversant with this topic. By doing this, he displays knowledge. The young man should then have a ready plan to introduce this topic swiftly and effectively, displaying skill. The old man should not even suspect that the young man is strategizing within himself. The conversation should flow effortlessly between these two men of different ages as well as generations. To do all these things, the young man should have a definite drive that pushes him to achieve a certain goal by holding a swift, effective, meaningful and free flowing conversation with this old man. The drive should be so demanding that the Young performs this task almost effortlessly. This demonstration of communication skills and the competence of pulling through with the task effectively defines communication competency in interpersonal communication.
