The narrator in the story is one of the people in the crowd and sets himself apart by referring to the other people from a second person perspective; later on e uses the first person when he introduces the messenger on the bike. Much unlike the rest of the people in the crowd he is biking down the street. He singles out the ashen guy as he was the odd one out of the entire crowd. From the fact that he was in the building when it was hit to the way he behaves contrary to the rest of the crowd. The ashen guy was in the eighty-first floor when the world trade center two was hit. It was at the lobby near the book store that he got the ash from an explosion.
In the sixth paragraph the narrator describes the guy's body. While every one else in the crowd tried to look back and see the events unfold behind them, the guy never looked back. In the body language of the guy, it could have meant that he just wanted to get away from the scene as first as practically possible. Although the narrator never identifies the guy, it could mean that he was one of the victims and he was too scared for his life, as an expression of the horror that was the bombing chaos. The people in the narrative walk in unison towards one direction and scared. At first the narrator was moving south towards the scene of the bombing, then turned north about six blocks from the World Trade Center to move with the crowd.
