Verbal communication refers to the use of words, both written and spoken, to pass messages (Lumen Learning, n.d.). An example illustrating the importance of accurate verbal communication is the use of whole words when texting; for instance, the use of "Okay" instead of “K." In this case, “Okay” can easily be understood by a person. Speaker Notes: Communication can be verbal or non-verbal. Verbal communication is characterized by the use of words and language to pass messages. The words can be spoken or written. In this example, the use of "K" can confuse one if they are not familiar with the use of a shortened version of the word. Accuracy of verbal communication is thus important for successful communication. Slide 3: What are two principles of verbal communication? Provide one example of how each can be applied in interpersonal communication. 1. Language has rules Semantic rules govern what words mean and how to interpret them. For example, the word ‘mine’ can imply that something belongs to one. It can also mean an underground location from where minerals are retrieved. 2. Language shapes our realities Words such as young/old, male/female, and tall/short are integral in helping us understand realities (Ashman & Cruthers, 2021).
