Many colleges and universities emphasize the importance of public speaking skills. In particular, they assert that the course enables students to present their ideas well, particularly in their work life. Freshmen students are less likely to take public speaking courses in college as compared to seniors.
Sarah Butrymowicz (2017) affirms that many colleges admit students who are not prepared to learn. That is the reason why the higher education institutions spend time to determine candidates who are ready and those who are not by placing newly-admitted students in remedial courses (Butrymowicz, 2017). In particular, public speaking is one of the courses that first-year students are tested to see whether they are fit to pursue their studies. On that note, many freshmen do not like taking remedial courses, and they omit them if they are not a mandatory requirement. Luke LeFebvre, Mike Allen, and Leah LeFebvre (2018) conducted a study that involved 3.7% freshmen, 48.8% juniors, 20.2% sophomores, and 27.5% seniors (LeFebvre, LeFebvre, & Allen, 2018, p. 351). These researchers found out that the majority of seniors were concerned about their communication skills. Although many of them might have ignored public speaking courses throughout their entire life in college, they were likely to pursue them before graduating.
